Apache Lake trip photos and maps

Apache Lake is the longest in the chain of reservoirs on the lower Salt below Roosevelt Dam.  It's 17 miles long with a variety of creeks and washes entering the lake.  The lake is bordered by the Four Peaks Wilderness on the north and the Superstition Wilderness to the south.  There are several nice beaches and coves, washes and creeks to camp along its beautiful cliffs and verdant desert environments.  Check out some photos of the lake we took by selecting the samples below.

Burnt Corral Campground and Rec. Area is about 5.8 miles south of Roosevelt Dam along Apache Trail AZ Hwy 88, take Service Rd. 183 to the camp.  This is a good place to get a trip started or base camp.  The route there from Tucson goes through Winkleman, Globe and up to Lake Roosevelt via AZ 188.  Apache Trail Hwy. 88 south from the dam is a narrow but graded dirt and gravel road suitable for regular cars/trucks with care.  Check the Google Map link below.

Be advised that all Forest Service campgrounds require a Tonto NF daily use fee and a Tonto NF Pass must be purchased at either the Ranger station at Globe or Roosevelt Lake open 7-days a week 07:45 to 4:30 PM.  The normal use fee is per vehicle per day (not per person).  One vehicle pays $6 a day to park or camp anywhere.  People 62 and over can get 50% off the regular fee with proper ID and their Lifetime Federal Lands Senior Card only at the ranger stations.  Sportsman's Warehouse on Costco Rd. & Big 5 also sell Tonto NF daily use passes but not for senior discounts.  Call for info or visit the Tonto NF website at:  http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/home.shtml

There are full camping facilities at Burnt Corral or a choice of good boat-in camping farther up or down the lake on the north side. (See "Camps" annotated on maps).  Though people can car camp at Burnt Corral, be advised that all boat-in camping elsewhere on the lake shore is remote and primitive.  All parties are responsible for themselves with their own water, boating & camping equipment, etc.  Be prepared for all weather conditions.  The Apache Lake Marina, Lodge & store are located a few more miles southwest down the lake along the Apache Trail/AZ 88.  It is accessed by service road 183.  This is the last access to Apache Lake before heading west several more miles to Canyon Lake below Horse Mesa Dam.
