Lake Mohave trip report - March 19-21, 2009
CASEY COMPLETES THE ENTIRE COLORADO RIVER IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA

Photo contributions by Casey Stakauskas and friends

Trip initiated by Casey Stakauskas (the last leg of his quest to complete all sections of the Colorado in AZ). Participants were Tony Peeters & Jenny (Beagle), Bonnie Bachman and Avra Bateson. Weather forecast was for Southwest winds so we set up shuttle for the put-in at Katherine Landing and take-out at Cottonwood Cove. Shuttle takes 3 hours round trip. Tony Peeters, Jenny, Bonnie Bachman & Casey drove up from Tucson stopping at Burro Canyon campground for lunch, located on AZ Hwy. 93, 50 miles North of Wickenburg. Avra Bateson drove up from San Diego. We set up camp at Telephone North Cove Thursday 3/19/09 and Tony & Casey locked up Tony's wooden tandem kayak at Katherine Landing. Casey's truck was shuttled to Cottonwood Cove since it can transport all three kayaks on the roof of his Dodge Ram truck. Tony & Casey paddled the wooden tandem kayak in the dark from Katherine Landing to Telephone North Cove. Camping is not allowed at Telephone North Cove (NO CAMPING SIGNS), however the ranger informed us that kayak camping is allowed as long as we didn't leave a vehicle over night. That was the reason Casey & Tony had to paddle the tandem kayak from Katherine Landing to Telephone Cove North.
Friday morning 3/20/09 we had glass like conditions and the South winds started up late around 13:00. When the winds started Tony put up his sail and Avra & Casey hung on to the side of his tandem kayak for a free ride. Camp was at riv. mi.14 at a very protected cove with plenty of shade from tamarisks. At camp during "Happy Hour" we enjoyed Tapas various foods in small portions and plenty of libations. We ate so much food during happy hour we didn't bother with dinner. Saturday morning 3/21/09 the wind started early from the Southeast. We all had plenty of fun surfing the waves from RM14 to RM22 (Cottonwood Cove). The waves kept building as we approached Cottonwood Cove. The 8 miles was covered in just over two hours what a difference having a tail wind makes. The following Sunday forecast was for over 50 MPH winds so our timing was perfect with a little extra work setting up shuttle Thursday night instead of the original plan to shuttle Friday morning.
