Lower San Juan River and Lake Powell, October 1- 9, 2007

This sea kayak trip covered the 20-mile section of the San Juan River from Piute Canyon west to the confluence with Lake Powell (Colorado River) and the 10-mile stretch south from the San Juan to Rainbow Bridge Nat. Monument and back.  The tour took nine days on the water including one layover day on Lake Powell.  The putin at Piute Cyn. involved a 3/4 mile portage due to low water and a recent rocky road wash out.  We left our cars in the lower canyon which was just outside of the Navajo Reservation (on Glen Cyn. Nat. Park territory) without any problems.  High-clearance vehicles were required to negotiate the steep, rocky & sandy 20-mile dirt road from the Navajo Mt. Trading Post to the end of Piute Cyn. (not drivable during rainy weather).  Mostly warm, sunny days and one rainy day after our putin.  A few days later, after visiting Rainbow Bridge, a cold front moved in with 40-mph gusts that we experienced over our layover day in a protected bay (no boats were on the lake or river). Colder nights followed and some wind but still plenty of sun.  We enjoyed a special treat when part-time lake residents Emily & Tony Ferris treated us to some delicious grilled brauks and cold beers at their small but well equipped houseboat at Wilson Creek near the end of our tour.
San Juan canyons visited were: Piute (camp, petrified wood, putin/takeout); Deep (beautiful running creek, deep pools & slickrock hiking); Desha (rocky running creek hike); Leroy (great camp with rim waterfalls during rain); Wilson Creek (lunch w/ Ferris family); Cha (nice running creek hike to large pool & waterfall); Bald Rock (camp w/ creek water); Nasja (spectacular canyon hike above-the-rim).  Lake Powell canyons visited: Hidden Passage (nice camp with crystal clear running creek & beaver); Music Temple (camp); Secret Cyn. Bay (layover camp - exploratory hikes in surrounding area); Bridge Cyn. & Rainbow Bridge NM (mile hike to the Bridge from the boat dock in Bridge Cyn.).
Trip participants were:  Helen Deluga, Norma Miller, Karen Moran, Tony Peeters, Bob Schoen and Casey Stakauskas.
